RiteCare Childhood Language Center of Orange County

Since the RiteCare® Childhood Language Center of Orange County in Santa Ana opened its doors in 2001, countless families have found a family-focused environment where their children learn to improve their communication skills and build self-confidence. The Center provides diagnostic and therapeutic services to children from 2 to 16 years of age who exhibit a wide range of speech, language and learning challenges.

Located in Santa Ana, the Center also provides intern opportunities for students from Chapman University who are pursuing a career in speech and language pathology.

The RiteCare® Childhood Language Center of Orange County is a program of the California Scottish Rite Foundation, a 501(c)(3) corporation. Under the leadership of our Advisory Council and the staff at Chapman University, we assess the needs of children with speech and language disorders and provide the necessary treatment.

If you can imagine a day without the ability to speak, you can imagine the need we serve. Some children need to overcome particular challenges, others simply need to learn the mechanics of speech. At the Center, we assess their needs and develop a plan for success. Nothing is more uplifting than seeing a child communicate with their family for the first time, or more satisfying than knowing the happiness that comes from a child’s first “Hi, Dad” or “I love you, Mom.”

ABOUT

The history of the Orange County Valley is a testament to the dedication and collaborative efforts of several key individuals within the Freemasonry community.

The journey began in early 1972 when Dave Bates, 33°; Carlyle Dennis, 32°; Carl Almquit, 32°; and Don Tapia, 33°, all members of the Scottish Rite Valley of San Bernardino, recognized the need for a Scottish Rite presence in Orange County. Together with other interested brothers, they petitioned the Valley of San Bernardino for sponsorship to establish a Scottish Rite Club in Santa Ana, the county seat of Orange County.

Their request was approved by the Supreme Council, and on May 5, 1976, the Orange County Scottish Rite Club was officially formed with 512 charter members. This club was a precursor to establishing a fully-fledged Scottish Rite Valley, operating for two years under President Don Tapia, 33°, and Secretary Dave Bates, 33°.

The club transitioned to a formal Scottish Rite Valley following this foundational period. Letters Temporary were issued in stages for the various bodies within the Scottish Rite:

Lodge of Perfection (October 1977): The foundational body within the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry encompassing the degrees from the 4th to the 14th, this lodge is the cornerstone of advanced Masonic education, guiding members through a series of degrees that delve into profound philosophical, moral, and ethical teachings.
Chapter Rose Croix (October 1977): This pivotal body within the Valley encompasses the 15th to the 18th degrees. This chapter is a journey through profound spiritual and philosophical exploration, emphasizing enlightenment, moral integrity, and the triumph of good over evil.
Council of Kadosh (April 1978): Spanning the 19th to the 30th degrees, this distinguished body within the Valley delves deeply into philosophical, ethical, and chivalric themes. Each degree is meticulously designed to build upon the foundational lessons of Freemasonry, emphasizing the importance of justice, duty, and moral courage.
Consistory (April 1978): The Consistory represents the culmination of the Scottish Rite journey within the Southern Jurisdiction. This body synthesizes the profound teachings and principles encountered in the previous degrees, solidifying members’ understanding of Masonic philosophy, ethics, and leadership.

By October 1979, the Valley received its charter for all bodies, marking the official establishment of the Scottish Rite Valley of Santa Ana.

The Valley’s journey continued with remarkable growth and evolution, always adapting to its members’ needs and aspirations. On November 3, 2014, after significant effort and advocacy by Shawn Bell, the Valley voted to amend its bylaws. This change officially renamed the “Valley of Santa Ana” to the “Valley of Orange County,” a proud reflection of its broader regional identity and commitment to serving the entire Orange County community.

The Scottish Rite Valley of Orange County stands as a vibrant and active pillar of the Masonic tradition, unwavering in its commitment to uphold the values and principles of Freemasonry. It fosters fellowship, education, and community service among its members, a testament to its enduring dedication to the Orange County Masonic community.

ACADEMY OF REFLECTION

The Academy of Reflection offers encouragement and instruction to Scottish Rite Masons interested in the pursuit of inner work such as meditation and silent prayer.

Rationale

Scottish Rite Freemasonry is inherently holistic in its approach to the moral, social, and spiritual development of its members. It offers beautiful and inspiring ritual, profound and stimulating literature, and inner organizations for men with a great variety of callings and interests. However, despite consistent reference in our ritual and literature to the importance of meditation and prayer in Masonic life, prior to the Academy of Reflection, there was no body within the Rite specifically dedicated to these pursuits. Men with interest in inner work have been forced to seek such light elsewhere and typically in non-Masonic organizations. The Academy of Reflection therefore provides such men the opportunity to pursue contemplative interests within the rich context of the Rite’s symbolism, ritual, and literature, and to associate with brothers of like mind. The Rite in turn benefits from their increased sense of loyalty and attachment. Perhaps more importantly, the deeper insights that naturally come from inner work flow out into the Rite as a whole, enriching the experience of all Scottish Rite Masons and enhancing the Rite’s potential to assist with the transformation of their lives, their families, and their communities.

Membership Requirements

Before submitting your application for membership to the Academy, please be aware of the following requirements:

You must be at least a 32° Scottish Rite Mason in good standing within the Valley of Orange County, California. Orange County need not be your mother Valley. Plural affiliations from any other Valley, Orient, or Jurisdiction are acceptable.
You must have attended at least three (3) group sessions of contemplative practice provided by the Academy. These most often take the form of meditation sessions scheduled during the Spring and Fall Reunions. Your attendance will be verified using our records, so be sure that you sign in at each session you choose to attend.
You will maintain an upright character and refrain from discrimination or any other activity that would reflect poorly on the Academy, the Valley of Orange County, the Scottish Rite, or Freemasonry in general.

Membership Application Process

Keeping the membership requirements in mind, to begin the process, download the application materials using the link provided below. Complete the Contact Information Form or provide all of the required information contained on that form in your application E-mail message. You must also include a personal statement concerning your perspectives on Freemasonry and contemplative practice and their importance to you. Please review the Personal Statement Guidelines for more information regarding the expectations for this statement.

Submit all of your application materials by E-mail with the subject “Membership Application” to the Academy’s Clerk. Once the Academy’s instructors have reviewed your application, the Clerk will contact you to provide their feedback and/or decision. If your application is accepted, the Academy will arrange for your formal induction at the next available opportunity.

The Scottish Rite offers an education program called Master Craftsman. This is your opportunity to learn the rich history, symbolism, and philosophy of the Craft, and a chance to participate in true Masonic scholarship with your brothers.

You’ll need to

Create an online account (using the same login for paying dues)

Fulfill the assigned reading (from its respective textbook)
Complete its corresponding quiz (via the online college portal).

Upon successful completion of each course, the participant will receive a certificate and a lapel pin specific to the course completed.

The Knights of Saint Andrew is a chartered service group of the Scottish Rite designed specifically for 32nd Degree Masons. The Knights were first chartered in 1993 at Tulsa Oklahoma where they serve through visible participation in reunions and other Valley activities. Chapters of the Knights are organized to provide social and fraternal activities for the 32nd members and also to serve as a service organization to the Valley. From Tulsa the organization expanded to other Oklahoma Consistories of Guthrie (1993) and McAlister (1994). Wichita, Kansas became the first Chapter outside of Oklahoma in 1998. We now have Chapters from coast to coast. We are taught in our Blue Lodges that the principals of Freemasonry are: Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. In Scottish Rite we are taught that the great virtues of Knighthood are: humility, patience, self denial, charity, generosity, clemency, virtue, truth and honor. Each of these principals becomes a block in the tartan that is a Chapter of the Knights of Saint Andrew. Following authorization by the Sovereign Grand Inspector General (SGIG) a Chapter typically begins as a Charter group of 32nd Degree Masons who tailor their own Constitution and operating procedures, set their meetings, dues schedules, and elect their own officers.

The Valley of Orange County (formerly Santa Ana) was the first Valley to establish a Chapter of the Knights of Saint Andrew in California. Since its inception the Valley of Orange County has taken the lead in assisting in the establishment of other Chapters in the California Scottish Rite.
